Lishman’s stars in Great Taste Awards

Our Yorkshire Chorizo has clinched the top accolade

The brightest of stars: Our Yorkshire Chorizo
The brightest of stars: Our Yorkshire Chorizo

This year our Chorizo has won what is widely regarded as one of the highest accolades in the UK food industry: 3 Stars in the Great Taste Awards. Based on the traditional Spanish pork sausage – but with a made-in-Yorkshire twist – our Chorizo has been placed in the top 165 of over 12,000 products which were put forward for the 2017 awards.

In addition, two further products from our renowned Charcuterie range picked up 2 Star Awards: Nduja and our Beef & Red Wine Pepperoni

The annual showcase, organised by The Guild of Fine Food, is described as the world’s most coveted food awards, celebrating the very best in food and drink and widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers.

Products entered are blind-tasted and judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates – food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, food writers and journalists – who decide which are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-star awards. A 3-star Great Taste award means the product was rated by judges as exquisite, while 2-star awards are deemed outstanding.

All three award-winning products are hand-crafted in-house by our Charcuterie team here at Lishman’s. Our Yorkshire Chorizo uses the finest high welfare outdoor-reared Yorkshire pork, seasoned with paprika and garlic. It takes a minimum of 28 days to fully mature. It’s certainly no stranger to success in the awards arena either, as last year it also scooped the Best Charcuterie Product title at the National Meat Products Competition.

Pronounced un-doo-yah (although a lot of us like to call it Nudger too!) our Yorkshire Pork Nduja is a soft spreading salami with Italian origins. It is seriously spicy; seasoned with cayenne pepper and chilli and has a wonderful melting quality. My daughter Emma’s favourite way of using this product is as a pizza topping – it’s absolutely outstanding.

Yorkshire beef goes into our Beef & Red Wine Pepperoni, which contains cayenne pepper, along with fennel, giving it “a hint of heat.” Our in-house Charcuterie is going from strength to strength and whenever I can (!) I head abroad to study at first hand the true craftsmanship of small, specialist artisan producers who have been making their own salamis and cured meats across many generations.

We have been working for over five years to perfect our home-made salamis, so for us to gain seven Great Taste Stars across three products , including a top-rated 3-stars, is a major first for us – and it’s a feat that the entire team here at Lishman’s can be truly proud of”

David Lishman, August 2017

“Great Taste awards are recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product. These prestigious awards are highly respected seals of approval. They are much sought after and greatly valued within the UK food industry.”

As well as always being available in our Ilkley shop, all three award-winning products are also sold at various farm shops and butchers across Yorkshire, including Fodder in Harrogate, Blacker Hall Farm Shop in Wakefield and Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium in Sheffield, and at J Brindon Addy Butchers in Hade Edge, Holmfirth.
